Building inspectors, sometimes referred to as construction and building inspectors, inspect the construction or repairs done to buildings. They look for abnormalities in the structural quality and general safety aspects of the building, and also typically inspect the condition of the soil as well as the depth and position of foundation footings before the actual erection of the structure.
In some cases, building inspectors also conduct periodical evaluations of the structure’s fire sprinklers and alarms along with any smoke control systems to ensure the general safety of its occupants.
An building inspector’s duties may include:
- inspecting structures for compliance with structural quality, building codes and ordinances as well as zoning regulations
- checking contract specifications for the safety and utility of buildings
- examining inspection activities through specialised computer programmes
- recording findings through work logs, file reports and photographs
- taking action based on inspection findings
- using survey tools to carry out inspections
